Pretty potluck look: So I’m part of this potluck group here in Austin, the lovely Farheen added me to a group of distinguished and discerning women who have families and have wholeheartedly welcomed me into their group. I attended my dear friend Juvairia’s potluck this past saturday of a Mediterranean theme. I brought the falafel and fatoush (my fave Mediterranean salad) that we ordered from Arpeggio Grill because I did not have enough time to prepare these items myself. I really enjoyed Arpeggio’s food when I first came to Austin. It’s a nice place to find authentic Mediterranean and halal food. But lately, it hasn’t been the best. The falafel were too dry, and the sale was already dressed with the pita chips which made them soggy when we actually ate. I had hoped they wouldn’t kept them on the side like Peace Bakery does. Hindsight and all that, I guess.

It was a fun night, where awe caught up with what’s new in each others lives. Kids birthdays coming up, new babies on the way and therefore, gender reveal party coming up. Wonderful gardening stories shared and my eagerness to get out in my own garden portrayed. It’s like old friends of numerous years catching up on the daily. There is some truth to this new notion of Squad goals, or love. A sisterhood truly is invaluable and only after I moved away from my network of sisters in Edmonton, AB did I truly feel what this means for any female, of any age, anywhere in this world. It is truly invaluable.

I digress, the picture of me below is the look I created with the product image above. It’s hard to see the eyeshadow, but I put just the lightest touch the iridescent purple shadow of Fenty Beauty’s Galaxy palette in the center of my eyelid’s lower half, and along the lower rim. Wanted a hint of glam, but more a muted polished look. I found that the RCMA colorless powder did not sit nicely on the FlowerBeauty skincognito foundation. Even after blending over again with a damp Mikasa Beauty makeup blender sponge, it did not set nicely, it looked too textured and not smooth, like it usually does without finishing powder. I plan on trying it out with other foundations, to see if its an ingredient thing or a technique thing. By the by, the Skincognito foundation sticks by FLowerBeauty are on sale for $7.70 on their website! Finally, I can’t figure out the Stellar Lighting Systems Go Diva Selfie Ring Light and so  I have purchase a new lighting system necessary for proper photos. Stay tuned!

In the end the look was still what I wanted, a clean hint of glam, my own lashes, not falsies look. What do you think?

I picked up a couple new items from Walmart the other day, looking for some inspiration and the new highlighter palette by FlowerBeauty. I obviously did not get the palette because this Walmart didn’t have it yet. I was pretty disappointed, but I found a few other items I had my eye on. the Ardell Magnetic Accents lashes and opted for this beautiful HardCandy highlighter palette. I stumbled upon the L’oreal Crushed Foil metallic eyeshadow in Diamond dust. Honestly this shadow is so pretty, it has an iridescent green tint as well as a kind of Burgundy undertone. It’s a crystal kind of finish and its just stunning. A little goes a long way! The magnetics lashes are amazing, they required a bit of fidgeting about in that I had to use a tweezer to get them to stay in place. You have to first put the top lashes to rest on your now lashes and then let the bottom ones join on via the magnets. They stay nice and tight and do not move, which is great once you have them the right place, but until then, its a bit annoying. It’s worth it for me though because then I do not have to deal with eyelash glue, which I don’t mind, but it does save time not having to deal with it. Definitely give them lashes a go! The picture below is an image of the look I created and on my YouTube channel you will find a close up clip of the look. Tutorial coming soon.

There’s nothing the effect of the constant reminder of the various mainstream products advertisements of their products. But when you go into a store like Target and decide to stop in the beauty isles, because you know, you just can not help it. You find there’s a decently competent sales person working there who see’s that you’ve walked around a product a few times, clearly debating which color to buy and she says, ” so I see you’re debating something here, can I give an opinion? This product I was debating was the Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Lip Color. I couldn’t choose between the rich plum shade in Believer or the nice peachy nude in Dreamer.

She began telling me about her journey with this product and how she’s a smoker and often found that any lipstick would eventually need touching throughout the day. But this particular lip color stayed on, lasted the whole day, regardless of how many cigs she had, or if she ate or drank anything, she did not need to re-touch it! I asked her if the product came off easily and she quickly said oh ya, the makeup wipes work best. She then went on to explain that the more dramatic shades were her go-to colors and that she had been hunting for a nice plum. She opted for the darker plum in this new Maybelline line called Escapist and loved it.

I was clearly intrigued asked a million questions ranging from length of time to dry to if it required a lip liner and so  on. Finally, I also opted for a richer tone and was super excited to go home and try it. She then returned with more wonderful info, that the Target app saves you money daily. Basically, if you are looking of r a particular product, check the app in case its part of the daily sale and that today these Lip Colors were on sale for 20% off and they are already fairly low priced at Target as it is!

Below is a picture of my trying it out for the first time. I was on my way to the Montessori  where I work and loved that it didn’t actually take as much time to put on. I find it really difficult to apply lip color within the lines as I have really strange skin around my lips. But the applicator in this precast really helped me out and as long as you remove anything that got outside the lines before it dries then your golden! It lasted the whole day, did not come off. truly does feel like you’ve applied ink on your lips. Only weird thing I notices is that when I did drink something like coffee, the color started to peel apart in bits on the inside part of my lips. It was almost like you were eating tiny bits of the product. Not the best experience there, but honestly minor for a busy day where you don’t have time to be concerned with your makeup.

Definitely go give this product a try, at $7.19 at Target, you really can not go wrong! They have a range of 20 colors and although in store there were only 9 on display and even less available due to the sale, keep your eye out. They will have them in stock soon enough! Leave a comment below if you’ve tried this product and what you felt!

On November 27th, I had the honor of creating and executing wedding makeup looks for three very unique and wonderful women. The mother, sister and sister-in law of the groom!

Prior to the day, I had a brief makeup consultation with the vivacious Maryam who told me she wanted a soft dramatic eye with light green and gold tones as her East Indian gown had these colors in it. I told her to send me photos of her clothing since they were her inspiration and this is often the ‘tradition,’ for lack of a better word, that most ladies like to have a makeup look that matches their clothing for East Indian or desi weddings.

Upon receiving her pictures, I could see that what we spoke about during the consultation without the clothes, was not quite what would work with the pictures Maryam sent to me. Furthermore, on the day of, I got to see their beautiful gowns in person and the photos did not do them justice at all. In fact Maryam’s dress wasn’t green at all. It was this pretty sky blue color with pretty pearls and white gold embroidery throughout it. It was the same color as Elsa’s dress from the movie Frozen.

These three ladies came prepared. Maryam has a working knowledge of makeup and clear talent as she showed Sadi and I (the beauty I’ve partnered up with and it is at her salon, Sadi’s Beauty Works, where I host consultations) pictures of the mendhi event (Henna party) where Maryam had done her own and her mothers makeup. Both looked stunning and beautiful and her talent was evident.

Once I got to see the dress, I had a general idea of what I wanted to create for this beauty. But to be perfectly honest, the final cut was no where clear in my mind. Meaning I honestly had no idea how this was gonna turn out. I had prepared my makeup kit the night before thinking that her dress was the olive green and gold that it looked like in the photos. All three of them had similar color profiles in the gowns according to the pictures. So  when I did indeed see everything, I was momentarily at a loss. Then I remembered I packed the beautiful @fentybeauty Galaxy palette that brings the necessary effervescent drama that Maryam was going for. So I made quick work of creating a clear palette where I did not color correct Maryam’s eye lids as I found although she has pigmentation there, it was already uniform and in a shade that matched her skin tone and would allow for any eyeshadow colors to show up true in tone.

I go to work with @anastasiabeverleyhills Prism palette which is another versatile palette that all makeup artist must have in their kit. These incredibly smooth matte, shift, and glittery eyeshadows work so well with he Fenty beauty palette! I started building a base with Anastasia and then topped everything off with Fenty and the finished it all off with @hudabeauty liquid lipstick and highlighter and away Samina went.

Being new to this industry and self-taught, I never thought I would experience what it is like to subtly transform someone. Samina changed from inner diva as is her personality to crystalline princess in 1.5hrs. Yes it took 1.5 hours to complete her look, from eyes, to color correction, foundation and contouring, cheek color and eyeliner with lash application to liquid lip finish. Not an easy task for a newbie to do in an under an hour. It also didn’t help that I instantly connected with this girl and we couldn’t stop talking, and therefore ‘fixing’ whenever we got too animated.

It was honestly the best experience so far, that I’ve had and I am so grateful for the opportunity! You can check out the makeup looks in my portfolio slideshow in the sidebar. They’re the three that are all dressed up like East Indian Princesses.

Drew Barrymore cultivated a line of makeup that is honestly so pretty. Being a cruelty free line, she’s got everything from glosses, lipsticks and liners to eyeshadow palettes to various foundations and base products. Her packaging is stunning, just look at it! Thats a rose gold Flower logo inlay contrasting with the black makes it look super chic. Barrymore also has a line of brushes that I have not had the pleasure to try yet, but are on my list. In the picture below, Im featuring her Flower Radiance High Shine Lip Lacquer LR2 in Give a Peach a Chance. Thats a hella long name for a lip product! I’m finding it hard to decide what to call this product, its not quite a gloss, nor a lipstick. I suppose lacquer is an apt label for it as it is not as sticky as a gloss but is highly pigmented like a lipstick. This shade is prettiest peach. It is a color that would suit most skin tones very well. I have a few other of her products and will be up for further review but the best part is her products are so affordable. The LR2 is only $9.00! You can find the complete line at most Walmart stores or online at https://www.flowerbeauty.com
